The Pinewoods Community AGM took place on 11 March 2026 and was very well attended, with around 24 members of the local community joining the committee to hear updates on the past year’s work and plans for the future.
The meeting was opened by Neil Hind, Chair of Pinewoods, who welcomed attendees and outlined the agenda for the evening.
Committee and Community Support
All existing committee members kindly agreed to continue in their roles for the coming year, providing valuable continuity for the group.
The continued commitment of volunteers remains central to the success of Pinewoods, and the committee expressed thanks to everyone who contributes their time and effort.
Treasurer’s Update
The Treasurer provided a clear overview of the organisation’s finances for 2025.
Members also heard about potential funding priorities for the coming year, including improvements to footpaths, nature walks and signage within the woods.
The committee extended thanks to local councillors and partners who continue to support the Pinewoods through funding and engagement.
Planning Update – Harrogate Spring Water
An update was provided on the Harrogate Spring Water planning application, with particular attention to the reserve matters decision taken in October 2025.
Several concerns remain within the community regarding the environmental impact of the proposals, including habitat changes and the duration of the proposed Section 106 agreement. The planning process is expected to return for further consideration in April or May 2026, and the Pinewoods committee continues to monitor developments closely.
The meeting also included discussion around the Asset of Community Value (ACV) process and how it could be triggered should land ownership or lease arrangements change in the future.
Volunteer Working Groups
One of the highlights of the evening was an update on the many volunteer working groups that support the woodland.
Led by Mike, the working group meets on the first Sunday of each month and continues to grow in participation. Activities include:
Himalayan balsam removal
Hedge and tree maintenance
Path and bridleway clearance
Ditch clearing
Habitat management and planting
The group is also supported by organisations such as the NHS, Community Fit and Harrogate College, who regularly volunteer during the week.
Wally also highlighted the important work of the litter picking group, while Rachel shared updates on the bird feeding initiative that supports local wildlife.
The committee thanked all volunteers whose efforts continue to protect and enhance the woodland.
Addressing Anti-Social Behaviour
The meeting welcomed Sergeant John Pepper from North Yorkshire Police, who provided an informative update on policing and community safety within Pinewoods.
Topics discussed included:
Fires and damage within the woods
Drug and alcohol-related activity
Rough sleeping
Dog ownership concerns
Sergeant Pepper outlined the work of the community policing team and shared ways residents can report incidents or concerns. He encouraged people to report issues and, where safe to do so, gather information such as photos or video evidence.
The police are also working with local partners, including the rough sleeper coordinator, to support vulnerable individuals who may be using the woodland.
Pinewoods Website and Brand
The AGM also included a preview of the new Pinewoods website and brand, presented by George Eglese. The new platform aims to improve communication with the wider community and provide easier access to updates, volunteering opportunities and news.
The preview was received very positively by those attending.
Harrogate, UNESCO and the Spa Heritage
George also gave a fascinating overview of Harrogate’s spa heritage and its connection to UNESCO Spa Town status.
While Harrogate was not included when the UNESCO designation was awarded to European spa towns, there remains strong interest in promoting the town’s historic spa identity.
The discussion highlighted the importance of natural landscapes such as Pinewoods as part of Harrogate’s therapeutic spa environment, supporting wellbeing, green prescribing and sustainable tourism.
Looking Ahead
The AGM highlighted the continued strength of the Pinewoods community, with volunteers, partners and local organisations working together to protect and enhance this important natural space.
With ongoing volunteering, new initiatives and continued engagement with local authorities and partners, Pinewoods remains a valued green space for residents and visitors alike.
The committee thanked everyone who attended and continues to support the woodland.
