March – The Woodland Awakens

March brings movement and sound back to Pinewoods. The dawn chorus builds each week as robins, blackbirds and wrens stake their claims. Birdsong builds rapidly as the woodland wakes.  Wood anemones start to carpet the woodland floor, taking advantage of sunlight before the canopy closes. Frogs and toads may be active near ponds and damp areas. Fresh green shoots and swelling buds signal that the woodland is fully waking from its winter rest.

Habitat & Conservation Update

From March onwards, we reduce major works to protect nesting birds. Monitoring becomes key:

  • Checking nest boxes.

  • Surveying early wildflowers.

  • Monitoring amphibian activity in wet areas.

Protecting quiet areas of the woodland is vital during this sensitive time.

How You Can Help This Month

  • Report any damaged nest boxes.

  • Keep dogs on leads in known nesting areas.

  • Take part in citizen science surveys.

Get Involved

The Pinewoods thrives because of the care and commitment of our community. If you’d like to play a hands on role in protecting and enhancing our woodland, we hold a volunteering day on the first Sunday of every month. Whether it’s habitat management, path maintenance, tree planting or wildlife monitoring, there’s always something meaningful to get involved in and no previous experience is needed.

We’d love to see you there. Together, we can ensure Pinewoods continues to flourish for generations to come.

Keep close to the land.
